What People are Saying About Yoga with Kasey:
I have suffered from low back pain since my early 20's and the older I get the harder it is to keep the pain away. This year it seems to happen more frequent and has lasted longer than any other time, so I started doing Kasey's yoga class and have been able to keep my back pain away. I am not flexible by any means but I have been able to do all the yoga poses. I had to miss a class in December and realized then that it does really help my back. -E.F.

Going in, I had never done any formal yoga. I was feeling quite tense both physically and mentally. However, the instructor Kasey soon put me at ease. Although I had good idea what yoga was through tv and other outlets, the class was not at all what I expected. I was surprised to learn and EXPERIENCE how breath is just as important as the poses. I became more limber and strengthened into the poses with each breath. My body and mind felt the opposite from which they did before class started. Thanks Kasey, can’t wait for the next one. -B.C.

About the Small Group Classes

Picture
This yoga class will be a way for students to learn how to increase relaxation and relieve stress in between acupuncture and massage sessions. Gentle poses that can be modified to fit any level will be held for longer amounts of time. As we hold the poses, we will work on relaxing our muscles through deep breathing and body awareness in order to increase flexibility in the connective tissue around joints. We will also learn breath work and some functional mobility exercises that students can use for self-care at home.

Kasey Halpin, CYT, LMT, MA92811
Certified Yoga Teacher and Licensed Massage Therapist in Jacksonville, FL

Kasey began practicing yoga in 2005 to supplement long distance running and boxing training and to ease some repetitive stress injuries incurred by these sports. At that point, she preferred the more athletic and intense practices of Bikram and power yoga.

In 2012, while practicing as a mental health counselor, Kasey became interested in the correlation between mental and emotional health and the physical body. She began to use slower and more gentle yoga and breathing practices with clients and for herself as a way to listen to and understand feelings of pain and stress in the body. After studying to become a massage therapist and learning about anatomy and the importance of stretching connective tissue and fascia, Kasey began practicing Yin yoga and became a certified yoga instructor in 2019 through the Regenerative Living School.
Kasey brings her combined experiences as a personal trainer, counselor, massage therapist and teacher to create a yoga experience that helps students learn how to listen to their bodies in order to achieve relaxation and provide relief for stress and pain in the body.

Yoga Frequently Asked Questions

What is yoga?

Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices that originated in ancient India. The term “yoga” means union and it was created as a way for an individual to bring together the body and the consciousness of the mind. Some forms of yoga are strenuous, inviting the practitioner to use strength, flexibility and balance to maintain physical postures; while other forms of yoga are simply breathing exercises done while seated or lying down. And there are a variety of practices in between.

How is yoga different from stretching or other exercise?

In addition to the physical benefits, yoga also helps slow down your thoughts and bring you into the present moment. This is done by paying attention to your breath and bodily sensations as you move into different poses. While during other workouts, you might try to “zone out” or “just get it done”, the goal of yoga is for you to remain aware of everything that is going in your body and mind during the class.

Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?

You do NOT have to be flexible to do yoga, but yoga will most likely improve your flexibility. Working at your own pace, finding your level of flexibility and then gradually and comfortably moving beyond that will not only make your body more limber, but will reduce pain and increase range of motion.

Do I have to have good balance to do yoga? I'm scared I'll fall.

You do NOT have to have good balance to do yoga. Some yoga poses do require balance, but these can always be modified by holding onto a chair, leaning against the wall or using the assistance of a yoga teacher to help maintain balance. In addition, a lot of yoga poses are done seated or lying on the floor so you don’t need to worry about balance.

Does yoga have any religious or spiritual implications?

Yoga, as it originated in ancient India, was a philosophy. However, a lot of religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and others use yoga as a spiritual practice, just as they do with meditation. But there are no religious or spiritual implications built into yoga itself. As such, each individual who practices yoga can choose to see it as an exercise, a form of self-care, a spiritual practice or anything else.

How often do I need to practice to see results?

As with most things, the more you practice yoga, the more improvements you will see. But by doing an hour or so a week, you will see benefits. You don’t need to go to a yoga class to practice yoga. There are so many poses and exercises that you can do at home for a few minutes at a time or even on your bed when you just wake up or are getting ready to go to sleep.

What do I need in order to practice yoga?

All you really need to practice yoga is yourself. If you find that you enjoy yoga, you might find it helpful to use a mat and some props, such as blocks or straps. However, these are not necessary and you can always find things around the house like towels, blankets, pillows and belts that can be used in the same way as items you might buy at the store. You don’t need any special type of clothing either, just something comfortable that you can move around in.

What are the benefits of yoga?

In addition to increasing flexibility, strength and balance, yoga can also greatly improve mental and emotional health. Yoga is used as a treatment modality in substance abuse and mental health facilities, as well as long term care facilities to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.  It is also great in controlling symptoms in physical conditions that affect not only the musculoskeletal system but all systems of the body.

Who should not do yoga?

Yoga is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. However, as with all activities, it is always advised to get clearance from a doctor and to use reasonable judgment when sick or experiencing an acute injury.
